His full name is Fionn mac Cumhaill, Anglicized to Finn McCool, "Finn" for short, for this cool dog. Fionn mac Cumhaill was not only the central hero of the Fenian cycle of ancient Irish saga, but a dog lover himself--and his dogs were wise and kind. For example, one day Fionn came across a little naked boy in the wilderness--and two of Fionn's best dogs were already there, guarding and protecting the boy. "Fionn" means "fair-haired" in Irish Gaelic.
